Having a great idea is the beginning of the creative process, not the end of it.
The bridge between idea and execution is the creative brief.
What a creative brief is
A creative brief is a document that gives everyone involved in making something everything they need to make the right thing.
It’s not a specification. It’s an inspiration document that sets the boundaries within which creativity can happen.
The essential elements of a creative brief
The objective – What is this piece of content trying to achieve?
The audience – Who specifically is it for?
The message – What’s the single most important thing this content needs to communicate?
The tone – How should it feel?
The format – What are we actually making?
The channel – Where will it live?
The CTA – What do we want the audience to do after seeing it?
References – Examples of content that captures the right feel
Constraints – Budget, timeline, brand guidelines, legal requirements
Briefing yourself
Even if you’re making the content yourself, write the brief. It forces clarity before you start, saves time during production, and gives you something to evaluate the finished piece against.
Exercise
Using the framework above, write a creative brief for one piece of content you want to make this week. Write the brief before you start making it.
